Appearance: The Lyretail Lunar Wrasse is named for its striking coloration, which resembles the phases of the moon. It features a bright green to blue body with purple and yellow accents. Its long, lyre-shaped tail fin is a standout feature. Juveniles are often more brightly colored than adults.
Size: Grows up to 10 inches (25 cm) in length.
Lifespan: Can live for 5 to 10 years in captivity with proper care.
Tank Size: Requires a minimum tank size of 75 gallons for a single adult due to its active swimming behavior and larger size.
Water Conditions:
Aquascaping: Provide plenty of live rock for hiding spots and open spaces for swimming. The tank should mimic the natural coral reef environment with a sandy substrate for burrowing and ample hiding spots to reduce stress.
Primary Diet: Carnivorous, feeding primarily on small crustaceans, invertebrates, and mollusks in the wild.
Supplemental Feeding: In captivity, offer a variety of frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and chopped shellfish. High-quality marine pellets or flakes can be included for added nutrition.
Feeding Frequency: Feed 1-2 times per day, offering small portions that can be consumed within a few minutes.
Temperament: Semi-aggressive, particularly as it matures. Known for being active and curious, it may exhibit territorial behavior, especially in smaller tanks.
Suitable Tank Mates: Compatible with other large, semi-aggressive marine species such as tangs, larger angelfish, and certain triggerfish. Avoid placing them with small or slow-moving fish that may be harassed.
Incompatibilities: Avoid housing with small invertebrates (such as shrimps or crabs), as they may be viewed as prey. Also, avoid pairing with overly aggressive species that could cause stress.
Difficulty: Moderate to advanced; requires stable water conditions and a balanced carnivorous diet to thrive.
Health Monitoring: Regular observation for common marine fish diseases like marine ich, parasitic infections, or fin damage from aggressive tank mates is necessary.
Breeding in Captivity: Very challenging. Like many wrasse species, Lunar Wrasses undergo complex reproductive behavior in the wild, with males creating territories and females visiting for spawning.
Spawning: In the wild, spawning often occurs at dusk, with males engaging in courtship displays. There have been no consistent reports of successful breeding in captivity.
Market Demand: Popular among marine aquarium enthusiasts due to their vivid colors and active personalities.
Wholesale Pricing: Generally priced moderately in the wholesale market, with juveniles being slightly less expensive than fully-grown adults.
Retail Pricing: Priced higher in retail due to their larger size and need for specialized care in marine setups.
Wild Population: Generally stable, though habitat degradation, especially coral reef destruction, can pose localized threats.
Aquaculture Efforts: Most Lunar Wrasses in the trade are wild-caught, as breeding them in captivity is rare. Sustainable practices and regulations are essential to prevent overharvesting.
Regulations: Compliance with international guidelines, such as those from CITES, helps ensure sustainable collection practices and protects their natural populations.
