DID YOU KNOW? Meet the Chocolate Chip Starfish
Share
Those chocolate-colored bumps aren’t a sweet topping! The chocolate chip starfish (Protoreaster nodosus) gets its name from the dark, raised knobs scattered across its body. Its cookie-inspired appearance makes it one of the ocean’s most recognizable sea stars.
A sea star, not a fish
Despite its familiar name, this animal isn’t a fish. It’s an echinoderm, related to sea urchins and sand dollars. Look underneath and you’ll find rows of tiny tube feet that help it move, grip surfaces, and handle food.
Where does it live?
Chocolate chip sea stars inhabit shallow tropical waters of the Indo-West Pacific, including sandy areas and seagrass habitats. They usually have five arms, and their bodies can reach roughly 12 inches across, so that small aquarium specimen may need considerably more room as it grows.
Its table manners are out of this world
Here’s a surprising fact: a sea star can extend its stomach outside its body to begin digesting food before drawing the meal inside. Chocolate chip sea stars feed on a variety of organic material and animal foods. In an aquarium, they need appropriate, targeted feeding rather than an assumption that leftover scraps will be enough.
Beautiful, but not reef-safe
Those charming looks come with an important care consideration: chocolate chip sea stars can eat corals, sponges, and other invertebrates. They’re better considered for a suitably sized fish-only marine aquarium with compatible tankmates, not a reef display. Avoid predators or persistent nippers that may injure their arms and tube feet.
Slow and steady wins the care game
Sea stars are sensitive to sudden changes in salinity and other water conditions. Provide an established marine aquarium, stable water quality, plenty of open space, and careful acclimation. Check any medication’s suitability for echinoderms before treatment, especially products containing copper.
Did you know? Sea stars can regenerate damaged arms, but recovery takes time and depends on the injury and the animal’s health. That remarkable ability is no substitute for gentle handling and a safe aquarium.
Thinking about adding a chocolate chip starfish to your setup? Talk with the Tropical Fish International team about tank size, feeding, and compatibility before bringing one home. This ocean “cookie” deserves more than a spot in the spotlight—it deserves the right habitat.
